Dr Yue Weng Cheu is the Clinical Director of DP Dental (Kovan) and DP Dental (Orchard). Having completed his BDS degree at the National University of Singapore, Dr Yue received an annual scholarship award from The Pierre Fauchard Academy Foundation.
He has been elected as a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons, Fellow of the International College of Dentists, and Fellow of International Congress of Oral Implantologists. Dr Yue has also obtained his membership of the Joint Dental Faculties of the Royal College of Surgeons, England.
Dr Yue has completed the full TMD continuum at Occlusion Connections in the USA and finished his mini-residency on Dental Sleep Medicine with TUFTS University School of Dental Medicine, and continues to lecture and conduct hands-on courses locally and internationally.
This masterclass consists of three parts where Dr Yue Weng Cheu talks about how to use Myofunctional Therapy and Orthodontics for the treatment of patients, from young children to the geriatric population, specifically in the treatment of Temporomandibular Disorder (TMD) and sleep related breathing disorders. He explains how wellness can be harnessed through the tongue and the importance of having a better understanding of the cranial nerves and how they control our cranial and survival reflexes.
In part one of the masterclass, he covers the origin of malocclusion and how this can be caused by the soft tissues, poor habits of the lips and tongue, and oral dysfunction. He covers the root cause of the problems for each age group, and discusses how these problems can be rectified to avoid future problems.
Dr Yue explains that for infants, releasing of tongue-ties can help with breastfeeding and eliminate a reverse swallowing tongue thrust and mouth-breathing issues, which in turn prevents malocclusion. Dr Yue also explains how being able to control your tongue allows you to control the full trajectory of the opening and closing of your mouth, which is then helpful in preventing TMD issues. He discusses how proper myofunctional habits of the tongue can promote nose breathing which then prevents future problems like sleep apnoea, snoring, and upper airway resistance syndrome for adults and children.
From this lecture, you will gain a better understanding of the cranio-facial-respiratory complex, how a low tongue posture contributes to airway obstruction which affects sleep issues, bruxism, TMD and posture, and how habit correction using myofunctional therapy, and breathing through your nose with your lips closed, while lifting your tongue to the roof of your mouth, can prevent future malocclusion.
In part two of the masterclass, Dr Yue talks about the correct way of swallowing, and how to use Myo Munchee to retrain the tongue and train the body to form a correct swallowing habit.
He discusses his method of integrating myofunctional therapy, and the changing of poor habits, with orthodontic aligners to correct malocclusion. He explains how this natural way of expanding the palate can eliminate the need for extractions and uses his own cases as examples to illustrate this.
And finally, in part three of the masterclass, Dr Yue covers how to use a digital workflow that incorporates the use of Transcutaneous Electrical Neural Stimulation (TENS) and jaw tracking alignment with a 3D headgear (K7), to obtain a bite registration to make an orthotic and aligners, to treat TMD and sleep disorders and correct the alignment of the teeth.
